This book is one of only a very few books dealing with the engineering features peculiar to hovercraft. These craft are often referred to as air-cushion vehicles, air-cushion craft, surface effect ships, ground effect machines, ground effect craft, ground effect vehicles, surface effect vehicles, aeroglisseur, luftkissen boot, captured-air-bubble vessels and sidewall hovercraft. Written in 1971 at the height of expanding worldwide hovercraft interest the book presents information dealing explicitly with the specific design features of air cushion vehicles. Particular attention is given to noise and propulsion aspects. This book has historical interest as well as being technically informative.

Contents
Introduction, Air-Cushion Systems, Air-Cushion Sealing, Aerodynamic and Hydrodynamic Forces, Static Stability and Control, Dynamic and Overwave Behaviour, Power Plant, Propulsion Devices, Economics, Noise, Reinforced Plastic and Inflatable Structures, Craft Layout.

About the author
Robert Longley Trillo, CEng., FIMechE, FRAeS, AFAIAA, AFCASI, qualified in mechanical and aeronautical engineering with an early career in research, preliminary design and sales with Rotol Ltd., Canadair Ltd. and The de Havilland Aircraft Co.Ltd. In 1961 was appointed Personal Assistant to the late Sir Christopher Cockerell, inventor of the hovercraft, and was later Research & Development Manager with Hovermarine Ltd. In 1969 he formed a consultancy which since then has engaged in research, design, development and marketing for many forms of advanced high-speed marine transport craft as well as airships and low-speed wheeled amphibious vehicles. In 1986 he invented the RTL Hydrocat, an ultra slender-hull minimum-wash catamaran. This led, in 1992, to the deployment of three Hydrocats on the River Thames which were to be the first of many more such slender-hull catamarans now in service for London.

Lectures given in Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Holland, Italy, Norway, UK and USA.

Editor and compiler of Jane's High-Speed Marine Craft and Air Cushion Vehicles 1986 to 1994.

Editor and compiler of Jane's Ocean Technology 1974 to 1980.

Private pilot 1946 to 1953
